Kendal deliveries delayed as 12 inches of snow lie overnight

Kendal deliveries delayed as 12 inches of snow lie overnight Kendal deliveries delayed as 12 inches of snow lie overnight

DELIVERY drivers have been stuck on Stricklandgate for more than an hour this morning, Tuesday, after heavy snow in Kendal overnight.

A driver from Manchester arrived at McDonalds at 7.55am but had to change his route as snow blocked his usually drop off point behind the Post Office.

Instead he had to park on Stricklandgate and waited 70 minutes before he was able to offload his delivery.

Booths supermarket’s deliveries were also affected with bread deliveries being carted through the snow from Stricklandgate through Wainwright’s Yard as a foot of snow covered the entrance to the main car park.

On one of the busiest days of the year in the dash to Christmas, most of Booths staff were out helping as three further deliveries arrived.

Marks and Spencer had to grit the road around the Elephant Yard to allow their delivery truck in but it was soon cleared and the store is ready for business as usual.

I I think that SLDC's handling of the snow and ice on the streets of Kendal are totally appalling, in fact they were none existant. We pay our council tax and we demand a much better service. People were slipping on ice everywhere on Saturday night. The council should have had grit on the back of a wagon
and thrown this on to the pavements, like they used to do. The council are negligent for it's inaction and as a result someone has died needlessly. the council should be sued.

I do wonder what people expect when we have a bit of snow. CCC are clear in which roads are given priority. Do we expect SLDC to grit ever single path in Kendal and everyother town/village in the area which only works if there is regular footfall. Would it be cost effective to employee people during the winter months just incase we have abit of snow.

Is it cost-effective not to grit the roads and pavements?
Delayed deliveries, abandoned cars, broken bones, loss of workforce who cannot travel, fatalities- GRIT THE ROADS AND PAVEMENTS PLEASE!

calanso- Would you be happy to pay an extra £100 per year tax to support keeping the roads/pavements clear for a few days each year?

Gritter drivers are not employed to sit around all year on the off chance of it snowing, they are existing council workers who undertake additional duties as the need arises. To suggest that adaquate road/pavement gritting would cost each tax payer an extra £100 per annum is ridiculous.
It is not about the cost, it is down to planning and organisation. I would guess Lakeuk that you are a fit and able 4X4 driver and not a pensioner who lives on a steep hill!

If you look at the councils website they are clear on what they do regarding gritting of roads and footpaths, what you're expecting is way above the councils current commitments covered by the council tax

Perhaps you are right, our local authority are perfect and it is totally unreasonable of me to expect anything which would make life a little easier for thousands of people. From this day forth I shall never, ever question what local government does!
