WITH the National League 2 North programme cancelled, training venues are the next places being hit.
The school we use for indoor training rang and said because of ice on the footpaths we couldn’t use the sports hall as we might fall trying to get in.
I explained that we were rugby players and were used to falling but to no avail.
A couple of characters called “Alf” and “Sefty” had made the decision in our own interests.
It then turned out that Alf and Sefty had decided not to clear the snow in the first place because that might have made the school liable if anybody then fell.
It was beyond me so we did a COSHH assessment on the snow and a risk assessment on our own field and held our training there.
We did fall and we did pick up some knocks and bumps but it was a good session to prepare us for the visit of second- placed Macclesfield this week.
Our first game against Macclesfield at Priory Park was a match in which we held our own in all parts of the field and game except the red zones, where they were much more exact.
They are the best all-round side in the league with no apparent weakness in forwards or backs, and of course they have the prodigious boot of Ross Whinney to keep the scoreboard moving along.
They are unbeaten since October and have picked up seven bonus points for scoring four tries or more in a game so play attractive rugby as well.
Weather permitting we will have to play with more spirit than them and be more clinical in our finishing to keep our own run going.
