A GOAL in each half gave Westmorland League defending champions Ambleside United a 2-1 win over Kendal Celtic at the Jubilee Playing Fields on Saturday.
There was an early exchange of goals in the opening ten minutes of the first division fixture as Ambleside went ahead after through a downward header from Craig Edmondson at the far post following a corner kick.
However, Celtic levelled three minutes later when Marc Brewer was presented with a gift of an open goal after the Ambleside keeper had skewed his clearance kick straight to his feet.
It was end to end for the rest of the first half although Ambleside dominated possession without fashioning another telling chance, leaving Celtic's best hopes pinned on trying to hit them on the break.
The Celtic keeper denied Ambleside with a fine save early in the second half before the visitors unlocked the defence after 55 minutes.
With the Celtic defence standing still expecting a foul to be awarded, an Ambleside attacker ran through and squared the ball to the far post for the unmarked Dan Nevinson to tap in.
Both sides had half-chances afterwards, but the Celtic keeper again prevented his side going further behind with three excellent saves. * Westmorland League football reports can be sent to the Sports Desk by email to the Sports Editor Richard Daniels at richard.daniels@kendal.newsquest.co.uk (to be received by 9am Monday)
