First responder scheme for North Craven

A NEW Community First Responder scheme is being set up in North Craven by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

Eleven volunteers will provide immediate life-saving care to residents in Clapham, Austwick, Keasden, Wharfe, Feizor, Lawkland, Eldroth and the surrounding areas.

They will help in emergency medical situations, such as a heart attack, breathing difficulties or a collapse, in the vital minutes before the ambulance arrives. The scheme will “go live” on Monday March 1.

The volunteers have all been trained in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automatic defibrillator which delivers a controlled electric shock to restart the heart. The First Responders will also carry portable oxygen.

Dave Jones, community defibrillation trainer for the ambulance service, said: “Community First Responders make a valuable contribution to their communities. “We know that in many medical emergencies the first few minutes are critical. If effective treatment can be performed within those first minutes, lives can be saved and disability reduced.

“Many people volunteer as a Community First Responder to gain experience, to help their local communities and some people have had personal experience of a loved one needing prompt medical attention and can see the value in this initiative. Volunteers come from all walks of life.”

Anyone wanting more information or wishing to volunteer should contact Mr Jones on 07917 053604 or email Dave.Jones@yas.nhs.uk.
