ONE of the UK's most famous sites has been lit up tonight in a spectacular launch of British Tourism Week.
Hadrian's Wall, a World Heritage Site, became a wall of light as gas-powered beacons were lit by volunteers standing at 250 metre intervals along the Roman structure's 84 mile length.
The first beacon was lit at Segedunum Roman Fort in Wallsend, North Tyneside, at around 6pm.
Thousands watched on as the tourches remained lit for around half an hour.
