Delayed daffodils don't affect Ambleside Flower Show

THE DAFFODILS may be late-blooming this year, but that has not stopped the Ambleside Daffodil and Spring Flower Show from going ahead this weekend.

The event, held by the Ambleside Horticultural Society, sees hundreds of entrants bringing in flowers such as hyacinths, alpines and narcissus. Classes in floral art, cookery and photography are also taking place for visitors.

But it was touch-and-go at the beginning of last week whether the event could even go ahead.

David Capstick, Chairman of Ambleside Horticultural Society, said: “On Monday I was a bit skeptical of whether we were going to have a show or not.

“We are about a month behind on the daffodil front, and we’re definitely down on them this year. But because people have rallied around they’ve turned out with other stuff.

”For the time of year and the weather the show has been excellent and we’re pleased considering on Monday we only had three entries.”

The Best Horticultural Exhibit in Show was a Himalayan Orchid won by Lesley Johnson. George Jaworski claimed three prizes at the event, including the President's Cup for Best Exhibit in the Alpine and Rock Plants Section of the show.
