STEP back in time to the age when the Romans ruled Britain, at the Heron Corn Mill, Beetham, tomorrow, Saturday (May 7) and Sunday (May 8). Roman soldiers and their families, as seen on C4's Time Team, will be taking the museum back to 400 AD with stories, displays and demonstrations of armour, weapons, food and medicine. There will also be presentations throughout the weekend on subjects such as hunting and weaponry.

THE famous Windermere Model Boat Rally takes place at Windermere Steamboats and Museum, Rayrigg Road, Windermere, tomorrow, Saturday (May 7) and Sunday (May 8). Amateur model boat builders, young and old, will be entering their vessels into a variety of classes including warships, steamboats and sailing boats. SPEND a spring day visiting the gardens at Summerdale House at Nook, near Lupton, on Sunday (May 8) from 11am-5pm. The garden is full of interesting herbaceous perennials and is open to the public as part of the National Gardens Scheme charity. There will also be home-made refreshments.

ENJOY a spring fair in the beautiful surroundings of RSPB Leighton Moss Nature Reserve tomorrow, Saturday (May 7) and Sunday (May 8). KENDAL residents are being invited to a two-day event looking at the architecture of the town, today, Friday (May 6) and Saturday (May 7) from 10am-6pm. Visitors to Kendal Town Hall can take part in a mapping exercise to allow people to vote for their favourite or least favourite buildings, borrow cameras to photograph the town and view historic maps to see how the town has developed. There will also be activities for children.

GET fit and meet people on two Walking the Way to Health walks. On Tuesday (May 10) meet at Kendal Leisure Centre at 11am for a walk around the River Kent and, next Thursday (May 12), meet at Berners Car Park at 11am for a walk along the promenade at Grange-over-Sands. THE Duncan Macfarlane Orchestra will be in concert at the Carver United Reformed Church, Lake Road, Windermere, tomorrow, Saturday (May 7) at 8pm. The band will be marking the 60th anniversary of VE Day with a performance of music from the 1940s and 50s, including some classics from Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey.

IMPERIAL War Museum North, Salford Quays, marks the 60th anniversary of VE Day with a weekend of special events including 1940s style makeovers, themed tours and object handling sessions. JOIN the Shop Art Trail at Grange-over-Sands until May 31. More than 40 shops throughout the town are displaying works of art in their windows.

BRONTE Parsonage Museum, Haworth, is holding an exhibition of the illustrations of the Bronte novels. On display will be a range of visual interpretations of characters and scenes, including early wood engravings and contemporary photographs. For details, call 01535-642323.

ABBOT Hall Coffee Shop focuses on the work of Mike Walker, who is showing a selection from his series of linocut prints entitled Linden Sequences. The images on show include abstract works inspired by music. Linden Sequences runs until June 20.

AN EXHIBITION of intricate Japanese fabric design, entitled Kimono: A Japanese Experience by Jill Clay and Katie Chaplin is showing at Farfield Mill, Sedbergh. LANCASTER University's Peter Scott Gallery is hosting an exhibition of paintings, drawings and etchings by James H. Morton until June 3.

THE latest exhibition at Lancaster's Storey Gallery looks at different artists' approaches to buildings and architectural spaces. Building Capacity explores the responses of artists to the buildings we inhabit, pass through, and imagine and includes Gordon Cheung's paintings of imagined buildings and landscapes and a video by Lucy Gunning entitled Climbing Around My Room. Building Capacity runs until June 25.

A NEW exhibition by revolutionary designer of book covers Talwin Morris opens at Blackwell the Arts and Crafts House on Tuesday (Apr 26). A contemporary of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Talwin Morris and the Glasgow Style features a variety of the book cover designs he created for publishers Blackie and Son. AN EXHIBITION of textiles and multi-media artworks from local artists Pat Crellin and Angie Flynn is showing at Brantwood's Severn Studio at Coniston. Crellin uses frayed and distressed silks, burned and distorted synthetics and paper to produce works inspired by lichens and mosses while Flynn uses a variety of techniques such as appliqu, quilting, paint and papier-mache to create humorous scenes from everyday life. AN EXHIBITION by Sean Scully, one of the most important abstract artists working today, is on show at Abbot Hall, Kendal. On display will be a selection of large-scale oil paintings, watercolours, pastels and etchings. Some works will be seen for the first time at Abbot Hall. The exhibition runs until June 25. TOMORROW is Kendal Town's equivalent of a cup final as they travel to Bucks Head, the plush stadium of former Football League side AFC Telford for the UniBond League Division One play-off final. Many fans are expected to accompany Town as they seek to surmount the last hurdle to achieving Premier League status.
