TV professor to appear at windfarm inquiry

POPULAR environmental broadcaster Professor David Bellamy is set to make an appearance at the public inquiry into plans to build Britain's biggest windfarm near Tebay this week.

The house-hold name will make an appearance at the Whinash Windfarm inquiry on Thursday, but will not give evidence, said chairman of the No Whinash Windfarm campaigning group, Kyle Blue.

Mr Bellamy a botanist who has risen to fame through TV, radio and writing to become one of the countries most respected and accessible environmentalists - has already walked the site of the proposed 27-turbine windfarm in protest against it.

He believes that the windfarm would cause irreparable damage to the local environment and blight one of the country's most beautiful landscapes.

Chalmerston Wind Power Ltd want to erect the 27 turbines, each standing almost 400ft tall, to produce enough electricity for 47,000 homes.

They argue that the windfarm will make an important contribution to the Government's targets on increasing the amount of electricity produced from renewable sources.
