SIR, We are concerned that the future of one of Arnside's most lovely, healthy and mature trees the beech on the footpath up to Silverdale Road near the old orchard is still not resolved and safeguarded. Of course, the wall beyond it is not safe and does need rebuilding, and the tree does need some attention; but we feel that it is such an important feature of the village that we and others have pledged some hundreds of pounds towards saving it, so that the costs do not fall fully on the John Barns Charitable Trust.

The tree is irreplaceable, and so many mature trees are being lost that it is hoped that the trustees will do their utmost to save this part of the village's history and heritage for the future.

Studies have shown that the tree would be safe with only minor interventions.
