FIRE fighters in Cumbria and across the country are being consulted on new proposals which could break the deadlock in the long-running dispute with employers.
A possible compromise based around a 16 per cent pay award and changes to working practices has been put forward by Professor Frank Burchill, independent chairman of the fire service's National Joint Council.
Duncan Milligan, of the Fire Brigades Union, said the union would be telling its members the proposals provided a possible basis for a settlement of the dispute.
He said that, while there was no chance of industrial action during action in Iraq, further strikes could not be ruled out if the employers dismissed the Burchill proposals.
