AN ULVERSTON visitor attraction - also the home of many Buddhists - has secured almost £100,000 from the National Lottery.

But the £99,600 award from the Heritage Fund will only cover a tenth of the £1.07 million project of essential repair work planned for Conishead Priory a grade two listed building - so a second bid will have to be submitted.

The money is needed for repairs to the roof, high-level stonework renovation and the replacement of vital guttering.

The large landmark towers at the front of the building also need to be taken down and rebuilt.

Conishead Priory director Kelsang Pagpa said although the initial grant did not guarantee further funding it was a "positive indication" that the project would receive further support if it was developed correctly.

If the centre manages to secure a full grant from the National Lottery Mr Pagpa said the group still had to raise £100,000 towards the project.

A funding appeal is due to be launched in May.

Mr Pagpa said: "This is a crucial first step towards hopefully receiving the full grant for these urgent repairs. By carrying out this work we will be ensuring the use of this important and beautiful public building for generations to come.

"This will be a great tribute to the hard work of everyone involved in firstly rescuing the building from collapse in the late 70's and early 80's and since then restoring the whole of the interior."

The priory is to be open to the public for house tours and teas at weekend from Saturday, April 26. During Easter the shop, grounds and temple will be open from 2pm to 4pm.
