SOUTH Lakeland district councillors have voted themselves an increase in allowances in line with inflation but committee chairmen will get a 100 per cent rise to bring them on a par with their counterparts on other local authorities in rural areas.

Committee chairmen did get an extra £750 on top of the £3,000 received by every member of the council.

But they will now receive an extra £1,500 "to reflect the increasing demanding role" of the job. T

here are six committee chairman sitting on planning, licensing, general purposes and the three scrutiny committees.
