THE NFU is calling on Chancellor Gordon Brown to fork out for farmers in next week's budget.
The main thrust of the NFU's submission to the Treasury centres on getting a commitment from the Government not to heap additional costs on the farming industry while encouraging farmers to move towards environmental and animal welfare projects.
Wesley Abbey, a North Yorkshire farmer and chairman of the NFU's taxation committee, said: "The farming community cannot sustain any additional costs on its businesses.
What farmers and growers really need is a genuine improvement in their financial position as a result of the budget." The NFU is lobbying for the chancellor to provide 100 per cent capital allowances for plant and machinery and 25pc on building to help the industry restructure and meet the suggested targets of the Curry report.
They are also calling for:
l Pegs on fuel duty, with exemption for bio-diesels.
l Greater exemption from the Climate Change Levy.
l Abolishing stamp duty on land acquisitions.
l Additional exemptions from aggregates tax.
