Sir, I would like to express my congratulations to Ingleton Swimming Pool, built by miners and looked after by a worthy committee, and now one of the best in the world.

Before the Second World War, my father, Sam T.

Clarke, delivered sweets and tobacco to the village.

One customer, Miss Hilda Butler, remains firmly in my memory.

I think she was responsible for my family enjoying a fine sunny day at the first swimming gala held in the new pool, though I don't remember the pool temperature being 83 degrees.

I entered several events, won some vouchers to be spent in local shops and purchased two vases which graced the staircase window ledge in the family home, Southfield.

To my shame, I cannot remember where they went when Southfield was eventually sold.

The pictures of the pool evoked strong memories of that day, I was under doctor's orders not to play any sport at that time as I was diagnosed as "having outgrown my strength".

If memory serves me correctly, boys and girls were entered in each race and swam together.

I think the miners did a wonderful job - a lasting memorial to their skill and community spirit.

Well done.

I wonder if any other swimmers at the gala are still alive, indeed, if any of the miners still enjoy their achievement.

I was in my early 'teens then so they will be getting on in years.

Long may the pool continue.

I feel privileged to have been there.

Sylvia Barron
