NEWLY-crowned Bay Northern League champions Netherfield failed in their bid for a clean sweep of trophies when losing in the last over to Chorley in Sunday's Slater Cup final.

Winning the toss, Netherfield batted first and made 184-5 off their 40 overs, with professional Jeff Vaughan hitting 62 and Simon Little 44 not out.

Vaughan and Jimmy Moyes came together for a useful third-wicket stand of 94 in 20 overs and Simon Little and Danny Welbourne had an unbroken stand of 52 for the sixth wicket.

It was a relief after Netherfield had stood at 6-2 with both openers back in the pavilion and Vaughan can count himself unlucky to depart to an unusual dismissal - being stumped off a wide!

Chorley stuttered early in their innings at 14-2 with Phil Hartley, who replaced David Wheatman, who had a bad back, removed both Neil Bannister and Iqbal Patel.

But Chorley skipper Roly Horridge and Nigel Heaton added 68 to take the score to 82 before Little bowled Heaton.

Horridge combined with Jim Fazackerly to add another 33 before Stuart Horne split this pair.

But Horridge, eventual top-scorer on 62, found an able ally in Neil Senior for a match-winning partnership of 70.

Wanting 50 from the last five overs, they threw the bat to good effect to require four for victory going into the last over.

In an anti-climax Little sent down four wides with the first ball to end the match.

Netherfield finished off the league campaign on a successful note, beating bottom club Preston by 36 runs at South Meadow Lane on Saturday.

Nobody got beyond the twenties for the visitors - a stand of of 58 between Little and Welbourne was the most productive period - as they were dismissed for 168 and Preston paid man Scott Henderson weighed in with 5-49.

Preston plodded away in reply with a possible 68 overs to face but were all out for 132 in the 61st after Marc Hadwin, 4-35, and Little, 3-16, did the main damage.
