Cockermouth 31, Windermere 17

WINDERMERE will not be too disappointed with this losing Intermediate Cup performance at Cockermouth.

The Cockermouth club play in one league above them, yet for much of the game the exchanges were evenly contested.

The Windermere forwards competed well in scrums and lineouts against a heavier home pack and until the later stages were always in with a chance.

Then a last-minute try and conversion took Cockermouth clear.

Windermere began the match badly and Cockermouth scored their opening try before they had settled down.

Their form quickly improved and though a number of players were operating in unaccustomed positions, Windermere were well in contention.

Cockermouth always had the edge and though the visitors defended well, with James Nield setting a fine example, Cockermouth built up a 24-12 lead by half-time.

The second half followed a similar pattern but at the end of an entertaining match, Cockermouth finally emerged deserving winners.

The try scorers for Windermere were James Nield, Mike Gregg and Richard Rigg with Paul Gillespie landing one conversion.

Windermere A entertaining Carnforth A at Dawes Meadow lost an attractive match 31-24.

They too played some good rugby under the captaincy of Jeremy Wood with a nice blend of youth and experience.

Promising performances came from Peter Doherty and Adam Wood.

The Windermere tryscorers were Adrian Gibson (3) and Jeremy Wood.

Windermere open their Cumbria League tomorrow (Saturday) with a visit from St Benedicts.
