A major family fun day takes place at an award-winning Lake District pub next month where there are plans being hatched to set a unique world record.

The Pirate Charity Day at The Watermill Inn at Ings village near Staveley, happens on Saturday May 15th 2010 to raise much-needed funds for South Lakeland Alzheimers Association, based in Kendal.

Participants plan to set a new world record in “Collie Wobble Throwing.” The trick involves competitors balancing on a wobbly spring-mounted platform and then throwing a “Collie” by its tail. A collie is a weighted sack tied at the end to form a “tail.”

The person who achieves the longest throw on the day wins and organisers are hoping to have official Guinness Book of Records representative along to record the feat.

The event has been organised by Brian and Alison Coulthwaite who run the award-winning Watermill. The pub – famed for its real-ale – brews its own called “Collie Wobbles.” They chose the charity in recognition of the support they give after a Brian's father Alan suffered and passed away from Alzheimers two years ago.

Everyone is being encouraged to dress up as a pirate and there will be range of family-friendly entertainments to watch or take part in, including - a “dry-land boat race”, jugglers, bouncy castle, tug-of-war, tractor-pulling, face painting, as well as live music throughout the day, duck racing and a Mountain Bike challenge.

The event takes place between 12pm and 6pm on farmland next to The Watermill on the A591 at Ings Village. The pub won (CAMRA’S) Campaign For Real Ale’s “Cumbria Pub of the Year” title in 2009. It was also named as one of Britain’s top 200 pubs by The Observer. It has a solid reputation for its extensive real ale – offering 16 different real ales at any one time.

The event has a dedicated website where people can find more info and illustrations of collie wobble throwing.
