Kendal's K Village opens its doors

More stories about: K Village

A NEW chapter in Kendal’s regeneration began as the £100 million K Village shopping complex opened its doors today.

Within minutes of the official opening crowds of shoppers converged on the upmarket riverside development – all curious to get a first glimpse of what was on offer.

They came from near and far, with coaches ferrying visitors in from all over the UK and hundreds of motorists taking advantage of the free car parking spaces.

Many locals, too, were eager to enjoy the new shopping experience.

The centre was officially opened by Kendal Mayor Coun John Veevers along with Jonathan Somervell, whose family founded the famous K Shoes factory, and Shamus Jennings. chairman of Kendal Riverside Ltd.

It includes a heritage centre charting the 160-year history of Kendal’s famous footwear brand.

Stores which have opened include Alexon, Double Two, Klass, Lakeland Leather, ProCook, Whittards of Chelsea, Staccatos, All Wellan Good and The Works, Domo, Denby, Mountain Warehouse, Bedeck, Cotton Traders, Julian Graves, Cadbury, Costa Coffee and Moes Grill.

Dear Sir,
While I am happy to hear our local dignitaries were treated to champagne hospitality at the re-opening of K Village in Kendal, may I make a case for the appreciation of a rather more deserving group?
The residents of Lound Road, Lound Street, Garden Road, Nether Street and the lower part of Parkside Road have had to suffer months of traffic delays, noise, dust in houses and on cars, and general disruption, yet apart from a couple of leaflets pushed through our letterboxes informing us of the chaos to come, we have - to date - had no acknowledgement or compensation for the nuisance imposed on us.
Given the predicted average visitor volume of 4,100 people per day (!), I anticipate continuing levels of tiresome inconvenience.
What a pity that the K Village management didn’t think of the PR benefit of inviting local residents to a special preview – or even the opening… Would a glass of wine (or two), a ham sandwich and a small speech in recognition of our patience be too much to ask of them now?

You have certainly been subjected to quite a lot of disruption during the rebuilding work but was there not a K-village on your door-step before?
Were you there before the K-village or the K-village before you?

Yes, there was a K Village prior to the rebuild. It contained 9 shops and a cafe. Damned big difference in size and noise to 21 shops and cafes, 90 flats and offices. The old K Village opened til 7pm at the latest. This one has got a licence for one of its restaurants to open til 2.30 am every morning and 5am Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. They wish to play live music until midnight everyday and music on the terrace until 10pm every night. So disruption hasnt just been for the last few years but will be an ongoing thing. As to the above licence we were unaware that this had been applied for as the notices were put up in the window at K Village and no one had access to it until Wednesday when it was too late to contest it.
We have been treated with utter contempt by the developers and I could elaborate in great detail if requested!!

Still, it will be handy if you want to do a bit of shopping!

madgran6 - these type of licenses tend to have lots of conditions, noise levels will probable be one of them. I know a couple that have been revoked for breaking conditions over the years.

Ask your local councillor to point you to the conditions of the license.

madgran6 - can't see any license details that match your description for K Village, only one I can see is one for the Mintfest weekend to allow Copacabana from Spain to do their show.

So madgran6 is perhaps not in quite so much discomfort as at first suggested, maybe its not quite so bad as some are making out

Found the licence - They can only do live music performance until 22:00 outside and it can't be amplified, all live amplified music must be indoors

recorded music can only be play outside till 22:00

So some of the accusations against K village are wrong!

Have you got shares in K Village Calanso? You are not affected by any of this so please button it! South Road, Romney gardens, West Street and Park Avenue will take the brunt of any music or other noise from Moe's as there is nothing between the cafe and the residential area to diffuse it. I personally think that the place should close with the rest of the K Village, just like residents were told during planning consultation. But that was just another thing to fob off the locals I think.

Quite right sabindoors, who am I to have an opinion? How dare I express something that differs from your point of view, I should keep my mouth shut and accept lies and scare-mongering spread about by others, I should whole-heartedly agree with you that if you don't like something it should be closed down regardless of what anybody else thinks. your's is the only opinion that matters and false accusations made by others are perfectly acceptable!

Moes have submitted another application to vary their licence conditions, details on the SLDC website

Oh dear calanso! We have gone from flippancy to pure vitriol. Methinks he protesteth too much! I was not suggesting you could not have an opinion, just that jokes, jibes and flippancy were unhelpful whilst discussing a subject which is very important to a lot of people. And no, the accusations were entirely accurate. Moe's applied for a license to 2:30am, 7 days a week. 362 days a year, with music 'til midnight. The other three days the application was for music 'til 4:30am and 5am closing. Happy Christmas and New Year to all local residents.

My sympathies to those who have suffered in the building of this. I know how it feels to have a bombastic developer doing whatever he likes at the end of your street. Paid a visit to this place this week. Rather disappointed to see that there is no longer a "Generic" café available. Only overpriced eateries with brand names emblazoned across the front. Tourists (and that is who they cater for) may not mind paying London prices - but I expect locals don't and won't.
