THOUSANDS of people flocked to the coast today to ensure a much-loved Furness fixture came back with a bang after being sorely missed last year.
Having been called off due to flooding in 2009, North Lonsdale Agricultural Show returned to Bardsea Park, near Ulverston, for a celebration of rural life.
Last year’s cancellation – made just hours before it was set to start - cost organisers at least £10,000. Persistent rain in the weeks leading up to the spectacle could not stop it from going ahead this year.
There were some fine exhibits on show, with local young farmer Dean Saunders, of Maidenlands Tarn, Marton, scooping supreme champion beast with Fagan, his four-month old Belgian blue.
“I’m pretty chuffed,” said the 16-year-old. “This is the third time I’ve won at the show with different animals so I’m pleased. She won reserve champion at Penrith and now she’s won here.
“It takes a lot of work, making sure they feed well, washing them and so on. It took a month to halter train her.”
Three-year-old Harry Rawlinson, also of Marton, tried his luck at the calf handling competitions. Mum Jane said: “Harry’s older brothers Robert and Richard were both showing and when they were training Harry wanted to take their calves himself, so we gave him his own calf.
“He’s learning as he goes and we hope that all of them will carry on with it in the future.”
Ulverston’s Case brothers were celebrating after their four shear texel aged ram, named Scrogtonhead Meins Pride, picked up supreme champion sheep.
“We’re very pleased,” said William Case. “He’s got a great carcass, great shape and is full of character. He also breeds very well. We’re very proud of him.” Also at the show was Barrow and Furness MP John Woodcock who said the event was a crucial fixture on the Cumbrian calendar.
“It is brilliant that they have been able to go ahead with it this year. It showcases the very best of the rural economy and all of the great produce and livestock that our farmers are producing.”
Meanwhile, over in the poultry tent, where B and L Shepherd won best in show, soft feathered judge Colin Mitchell explained what he was looking for in each bird.
“We study the type, colour, legs, head, plumage and general condition. There’s a very good standard at this show, especially for this time of year when most birds are moulting.”
The horse section drew in spectators throughout the day, while a live bee show, several trade stands, and a motorcycle stunt display by Flyin’ Ryan kept show goers entertained.
And there was plenty for children to see and do, including donkey rides, bungee trampolines, fairground rides and junior exhibition classes, where youngsters could enter craftwork such as a miniature garden on a plate, or a decorated Wellington boot.
Show president Ralph Spours summed up the day when he said: “Everyone loves the show – the colour, the spectacle, the smells, the range of interesting things going on, the thrill of winning a prize.
“It is a fine exhibition of what the district is all about. And amidst it all is a grand opportunity to have a chat and see folk that perhaps one hasn’t seen since the last show. It’s a truly social occasion.”
