A FOUR-year-old Wensleydale boy has died in a tragic accident after being hit by a vehicle on a farm.
Harry Sowerby, who lived with his parents, Richard and Charlotte, on a farm at Thwaite Bridge, near Hawes, lost his life after an accident involving a 4x4 vehicle and a trailer at a farm in Marsett, near Askrigg, in the Yorkshire Dales.
Harry suffered serious head injuries in the incident, and was airlifted to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
It is understood his family, who were too upset to talk yesterday, also farm at Marsett, but it is not clear whether the accident took place on their land.
The youngster attended Dalesplay day care centre, in Hawes, Manager Joanne Middleton said: “We will really miss him and we are really saddened by what has happened.
"This has touched everyone. It’s left a dark cloud hanging over Hawes.”
John Blackie, chairman of Hawes and High Abbotside Parish Council, said the tragedy had cast a ‘dark shadow of sadness over the community’.
Yorkshire Ambulance Service said it received a call at 12.27pm on Thursday and a community paramedic, road ambulance, and a Yorkshire Air Ambulance helicopter were sent to the scene.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “The boy sustained serious head injuries and was airlifted to Harrogate District Hospital for treatment.
“Sadly, he was pronounced dead in hospital at about 1.30pm.
“Police inquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of death.”
A Health and Safety Executive spokeswoman said because the incident was not work-related, it would not be looking into the matter.
“The Health and Safety Executive protects workers and members of the public with regard to workplace activity.
“After making initial inquiries, this incident does not fall under HSE’s remit, so we will not be investigating further.”
