A teenager involved in a crash on the M6 earlier today has been rushed to hospital with serious head injuries.

At around 1pm today Cumbria Police attended an incident where a car had gone off the road and overturned, near junction 39 Shap, landing in the field which separates both sides of the motorway.

The Great North Air Ambulance flew a 12-year-old girl to Newcastle General Hospital with serious head injuries, while an 8-year-old was rushed to Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, also with head injuries.

The mother and another child also in the car were taken to Cumberland Infirmary.

The third lane on the motorway was closed for a number of hours so emergency services could gain access to the accident.

Cumbria ambulance, fire and Highways Agency attended the incident.
