TOWNS and villages in South Lakeland and Eden harvested a crop of trophies in this year’s Cumbria in Bloom Awards.
And coming up smelling of roses in the 25th year of the competition was Kirkby Stephen which scooped silverware in a number of categories.
For the first time in 10 years, two gold awards were presented at the presentation event, one of which went to the Eden village after it won the SLC Trophy for Tidy Village (Large).
Kirkby Stephen also won the Kimberley Clark Trophy for Best Village Overall, the Lake District National Park Trophy for Best Large Village/Small Country Town, and the Friends of the Lake District Trophy for Best Sustainable Development. This prize was given because villagers had planted flowers and trees which would come up again and again including a wood on the outskirts of the village at Edensyde and a sensory garden on Silver Street.
“It’s quite a step up for us,”said Joan Johnstone, member of the Kirkby Stephen in Bloom committee and chair of the town council. “We were delighted and everybody has been very supportive. It’s a big commitment.
“The town council have been very supportive, and we have Brownies, Scouts, Rotary as well as individuals and businesses who have all come on board and worked hard to make Kirkby Stephen look so good.”
She added that Kirkby Stephen would be competing for the Britain in Bloom village title next year.
Windermere-in-Bloom members were also celebrating after scooping the GlaxoSmithKline Trophy for best town for the third successive year.
Adrian Faulkner, treasurer of Cumbria in Bloom who lives in Windermere, said: “It’s not so much winning it, but earning it, so grateful thanks go to the whole community.”
Other winners included the Graythwaite Manor Hotel in Grange-over-Sands, which won the Lakeland Limited Trophy for Best in the commercial section, while Quarry Rigg in Windermere won the Continental Landscapes Trophy Special Category.
The Cumbria Tourist Board (CTB) Rose Bowl Trophy for self-catering establishments and visitor attractions was awarded to Holker Hall and Gardens in Cartmel, while The Willowsmere on Ambleside Road, Windermere, was the recipient of the CTB Chairman’s Trophy for best bed and breakfast/guest house.
The Houghton Hall Trophy for Best Village was won by Morland, while Morland School was winner of the Doreen Parsons Young Persons Trophy for Best Project/Effort by youngsters.
Grange scooped the Jennings Trophy for Best Small Town.
Kendal was runner-up with a Silver Gilt award for the Best Large Town, a category which saw Whitehaven victorious.
