THE re-opening of Ulverston’s Sir John Barrow Monument after seven years of closure has been hailed a triumph.

Colin Hodgson, chair of the restoration committee, said: “The support has been splendid and I would like to thank everyone who has donated and helped out with the project.

"Let’s hope it lasts another 160 years.”

The final part of the plan, footpath improvement, is due to start in the next few weeks to assist those visiting the Grade 2* Listed Building, which will be open to the end of October on Sundays between 2pm and 5pm.

Mr Hodgson added: “Whenever the flag is flying, the monument is open.”
