GIANT gourds were exhibited at Sawrey’s annual Marrow Day which attracted visitors from the USA and Australia.

There were categories for best matching pair, best looking and, of course, the heaviest marrow.

Three of the biggest marrows ever grown in the competition’s history were presented on the day. The heaviest weighing in at 115lbs is so big it has been named Sydney.

Roger Jones grew the giant for his step daughter Rachael who has been in Australia for the past year “It was a good way of keeping Rachael in our minds,” said Mr Jones. “I’ve been sending her updates and pictures on Facebook since the spring.

“Luckily she managed to get home in time so she could see the culmination of the year’s work".

The annual Underbarrow Marrow Day, held at the Punchbowl pub, raised £5,000 for the St John’s Hospice in Lancaster.

It was opened by the Mayor of Kendal, Coun John Veevers, and the heaviest marrow was grown by Chris and Carmen Sands, weighing in at 104lbs.
