A MAN lost his life yesterday morning while ice climbing in the eastern Howgills, near Sedbergh.
Fourteen members of the Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team responded to the incident on the frozen Cautley Spout waterfall.
They were assisted by 13 members of the Kendal team, together with two from the Teesdale team and three from Cave Rescue who were walking and climbing in the area.
A paramedic from the Air Ambulance was able to access the incident site but was unable to resuscitate the man who had fallen some 25 metres. His climbing companion was unhurt.
Given the difficulty of the location in a deep rocky gill the teams were pleased to have the support of a Sea King from RAF Valley to winch the deceased man from where he had come to rest.
It transfered him to a Mountain Rescue Land Rover to be taken to an ambulance waiting by the roadside at the Cross Keys Inn lay-by.
