LAKELAND OC finished runners-up in the Yvette Baker Trophy – a prestigious national competition for junior orienteers.

Twenty five runners Lakeland aged between 12 and 17 did well with some very fast runs from Katie Mitchell on Yellow, Natalie Beadle and Will Rigg on Light Green and Angus Dobson on Orange.

However, at the final reckoning ‘Droobers’ were victorious , beating Lakeland into second place with Salisbury club ‘Sarum’ third.

he previous evening, senior club member Diana McClure became the W60 British Night Champion in Bentley Woods, Warwickshire.

Beryl Offley took the silver medal in the W55 class.

Other Lakeland results were Judy Burge fourth W50; Heather Burrows sixth in the Women’s Open class; Steve Burge seventh M65; Steve Buckley and Dick Towler sixth and tenth M60 and Derek Fryer 14th M55.

Other members travelled to Yorkshire on Sunday for a Regional standard event in and around Brimham Rocks.

Richard Wilson was first M55 and seventh overall with Martin Smith (M50) eighth over the longest course, the 9.8km Black.

Over the 5.6km Blue, Simon Filmore (M55) was tenth, Jackie Chapman (second W50) 47th and Anne Wilson (third W55) 79th.

The event was a counter in the 2011North West Orienteering League, thus giving the girls - Lakeland OC’s Natalie Beadle and Katie Wright and Barrow’s Sarah Jones - an early boost to their aspirations for success in the W16 division of the league.
