BIRTHDAY cake and celebrations marked the first anniversary of Kendal and District`s Transition Town status.
Scores of people visited Kendal Town Hall on Saturday to talk to some of the area’s 300 societies and sports clubs, and to support the group’s aim to make Kendal more sustainable.
The organisers, South Lakes Action on Climate Change, had originally planned for twenty groups, but over twice that number asked to attend - from judo to flower arranging and morris dancing to philately.
SLACC chairman Chris Rowley said the strength of the community was a fundamental part of their movement.
“We produced a birthday cake using local ingredients and hundreds of people came to see the 45 stalls,” he said.
Mayor John Veevers helped the group launch its next project, a Sustainable Living Challenge in collaboration with Kendal Town Council which aims to see people commit to a positive change for one week.
A ‘Monster Mural’, detailing some of the activities taken on for a week by community groups is also planned.
