A LIGHT aircraft crash on the Ingleborough Moors left two people in hospital last night.

Clapham Cave Rescue and North Yorkshire Police were informed a Cessna aircraft crashed near Ingleborough and the two casualties were transferred to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

Duty controller for Cave Rescue Tom Redfern told The Westmorland Gazette: "The crash occurred just below the summit of Ingleborough on the south east slopes and both had to be stretchered down to Trow Gill and then taken to Clapham.

"One of the injured broke both ankles and suffered chest injuries and the other broke both ankles and had upper leg injuries."

Mr Redfern said helicopters were unable to assist with the rescue almost 700m up due to poor visibility and therefore the team had to stretcher the duo down from Ingleborough.

Chief Inspector Simon Lovell from North Yorkshire Police confirmed a Cessna aircraft crashed on the Moors at 9.18pm.

He said: "The aircraft, a Cessna, with two people on board crashed on the Ingleborough Moors near Settle."

"The plane had left Blackpool earlier in the evening flying north towards the Kirkby Lonsdale area via Clitheroe.

The Civil Aviation Authority and Air Crash Investigation have been informed of the incident.
