PLANS for a new 67-metre wind turbine on land to the south of Burton Services, off the the M6, has been given the go ahead by Lancaster City Council’s planning committee.
South Lakeland District Council, Cumbria County Council and the parishes of Burton, Holme and Beetham objected to the proposal on the grounds that the turbine would create a ‘significant adverse effect on the landscape character’.
Ackenthwaite resident Sir Christopher Audland said the turbine would have a ‘colossal’ effect on the views.
He claimed the turbine would be two thirds the size of Farleton Crag and be visible to walkers in Arnside.
Planning committee chairman Coun Keith Budden said: “As a country we have to start looking at other sources of energy, this is just another step along that path.
"The decision wasn’t made lightly but we have to do something if we want to keep switching the lights on in years to come.”
Moto Service, which owns more than 40 service stations across Britain, said it was using the Burton station as a pilot.
The spokesperson said Burton was chosen due to its weather conditions.
