Lune Valley hunt off to a Boxing Day gallop for first time in three years

Lune Valley hunt off to a Boxing Day gallop for first time in three years Lune Valley hunt off to a Boxing Day gallop for first time in three years

HUNDREDS of supporters turned out today to wave off the Vale of Lune hunt at Tewitfield - the first time in three years that the Boxing Day meet has been able to go ahead.

A large contingent of horses and riders gathered The Longlands Hotel for the colourful event, which, like many hunts, was cancelled for two years running because of snow and ice.

Master and huntsman Clive Richardson said: “Last year the temperature plummeted to minus 15, making it dangerous for both the horses and the hounds.

“This year, however, it’s just so incredibly wet after a month’s consistent rain and we are very grateful to the farmers for allowing us to get out in these conditions. We owe them a debt of gratitude - without farmers’ support the hunt wouldn’t exist.”

Meanwhile, Farming Minister Jim Paice has said the 2005 Hunting Act, which makes it illegal to hunt wild animals using dogs, ‘simply doesn’t work’.

Speaking out before hundreds of hunts got underway around the country, Mr Paice said he supported hunting with dogs and said there would be a vote on whether to repeal the act when there was ‘time in the parliamentary calendar’.

On a visit to hunt kennels at Milton Park, Peterborough, the Conservative minister said: "The current law simply doesn't work. I personally am in favour of hunting with dogs - and the coalition agreement clearly states that we will have a free vote on whether to repeal the act when there is time in the parliamentary calendar to do so."

Alice Barnard, chief executive of the Countryside Alliance, said 250,000 people were expected to come out to support more than 300 local Boxing Day hunts.

She said despite prejudice, hunting across the UK remained as strong as ever.

The next Vale of Lune hunt sets off The Castle Inn, Hornby on Monday, January 2, at 11.30am.

These people even have their own websites:
www.vlhunt.com
They take over when there's a hunt! Illegal parking, blocking public roads with their over priced trailers and that's all before they "hunt"! Why does the law turn a blind eye? These people shouldn't be allowed to do this!

What's wrong with giving a pack of dogs exercise?

About 250,000 hunt supporters turned out for Boxing Day meets yesterday as the political debate over hunting began to rage again.

A total of 300 legal hunts – following a trail rather than chasing a fox – took place, but with many participants sensing that the return of the more traditional version might be near.

Agriculture Minister Jim Paice has called for the hunting ban introduced by Labour to be repealed, saying it ‘simply doesn’t work’. The Government has promised MPs a vote on whether to legislate to repeal the Hunting Act, which came into force in 2005. .

Fox hunting is a very highly skilled sport requiring trained horses, skilled riders, a fox that stole a chicken, dogs that have to be fed, lush green country side, stone walls, ditches, trees that have fallen to be constructed as obstacles, equipment, livery horse shoes, horse coats, coats for all the riders, jodhpurs, saddles, bridles, photographers, castles, moats, it is an ancient tradition. Drag hunts where the sent is already laid out and the fox is not caught at the end of it are too fast, horses get hurt, and riders can fall off. Healthy animals that have to be taken care of. Pasture land for grazing, its called country life deal with it , bet you all ate turkey on xmas day and roast pork on boxing day and I bet them animals were treated worst before they reached your table ..TALLY HO

Dress it up all you like, fox hunting is barbaric. Period. Nothing you can say will make me change my mind.
Would it be acceptable if the hounds were chasing a lovely fluffy kitten instead of a fox?

Lakeuk says...
10:57pm Wed 28 Dec 11

This isn't fox hunting though, it's trail hunting - if a fox was killed then it would of been reported.

Drag hunt too fast for dogs / horses!! Rubbish reason to bring back fox hunting, if riders/horses get injured then it's the riders fault, they can slow the horse down

Oh dear lady tilly. You really are deluded. Every sport out there requires skill. You want to preach about the country side? Feel free! A fox that ears a chicken...that's called nature. A pack of hounds, horses and riders chasing a fox IS NOT NATURE! Yes I ate turkey this Christmas. It was locally bred and killed, as is all the meat I eat. Whether fox hunting has been around for 10 minutes or hundreds of years, it's still barbaric and cruel!

Here here tictoc1,

I see no difference between fox hunting and dog fighting, **** fighting, bull fighting, etc

All promote animal cruelty for the so called benefit of entertainment.

Lakeuk, you say this was a trail hunt. Innocent? However there are claims that some fox hunts have been falsely claiming that they have converted to drag/trail hunting, purely to allow them to carry on with the intentional pursuit of live foxes.

I'm not saying this is true in this case but.... you never know.

No fox was hunted for - it was a drag hunt, the turn out was fantastic, I am certainly not a snob, I am from a working class back ground.

Lakeuk says...

zaney5- unless we know the local hunt has kill a fox we can't assume so, they're enough the anti brigade out there monitoring the hunts to make the press aware if a fox is hunted/killed.

This is nothing more that a horse ride/dog walk by a load of toffs

A fox killed 7 of my brother in law's hens - and didn't eat any of them!

Foxes are like cats, they kill because they get the opportunity, not because they are hungry.

As for barbaric, it must rub off, because hunt saboteurs have resorted to barbaric practices themselves.
And before anyone says it is the actions of a small minority - remember the same applies to hunts - only a small minority carry out cruel practices!

Zaney, if you have EVIDENCE to back up your claims, then you must report it as soon as possible, and have the perpetrators arrested.

If you have NO evidence, then don't bother posting up your suspicions as if they were fact... then excusing it because "you never know...!!"

Lady Tilly, imo "fox hunting" and drug dealers are not too dissimilar! They both have the prospect of killing. You're obviously passionate about hunting, I am not. But I would just like to mention, that I work dam hard and I enjoy the lifestyle I lead, and maybe I am a snob! But I don't support fox hunting. And to everyone who criticise snobs, I was once told "that if being a snob means you want better for yourself and your family, then so be it".
Happy New Year to all!

Duh to all you anti's. No foxes would be chased anyway as the Vale of Lune is a Harrier pack. And duh to anti's hunting live quarry is illegal so it doesnt happen. Instead it's shot or poisoned but thats what the anti's want. We're working class - enjoy our horses and hounds. For the sake of the fox lets hope hunting becomes legal as at least he has a chance better than against a snare or poison.

"Duh"..... what an educated turn of phrase!

And how naive to think that just because something is illegal it "doesn't happen".

not naive at all just informed and somewhat more educated in these matters than your good self, however like most antis you will only see what you want to see and now the ban is in place you probably care little for what is happening to the fox,I do care and he is definitley worse off . Happy hunting
