Icy weather: Hazardous conditions in Kendal and Windermere

TREACHEROUS conditions are causing mayhem for motorists and pedestrians in Kendal Town Centre.

Sandes Avenue and the New Road car park were particularly icy, with one Lancaster resident having to ditch a meeting in Dalton-in-Furness because of traffic problems on the A591.

"It isn't very good at all," said Jonathan Findlater, 54.

"They're gritting the roads but the local areas aren't being treated."

Mr Findlater also struggled to park his vehicle on the icy New Road car park.

In Windermere conditions have also been described as dangerous, with some residents advising people not to leave their homes unless they really have to.

Karl Schrader, 68, of Alexandra Road, said there had not been any grit delivered in his street for three years.

He added: "This morning there is not one grain of grit on our road and there never has been. I don't think anyone should go out.

"The rain overnight has frozen and it is very slippery all the way up to the library.

"The road is only 200m long but is on a slope and pupils trying to get to the school [St Mary's CofE] have been sliding down on their bums because it was the safest way."
