Multiple accidents in dense fog close M6 northbound in Eden

POLICE have warned drivers to take care in fog after several accidents closed the northbound carriageway of the M6 in Eden this afternoon.

Around 12 vehicles were involved in a multiple incidents on a short stretch of the M6 between J39 (Shap) and J40 (A66).

Traffic backed up for several miles while emergency services cleared the accident scenes. All three northbound lanes are now open.

Police said a number of people suffered injuries but none were life-threatening.

Inspector Matt Pearman, of Cumbria Police, said 'two or three' separate collisions occurred in very dense fog.

"I would warn motorists to take care when driving in such conditions, which basically can be very dangerous," he said.

I despair.
After seeing drivers all year with fog lights on that were not necessary - and illegal, today in patchy fog between Windermere and Kendal, there were many drivers with NO LIGHTS on whatsoever!

No wonder there are accidents!

Totally agree "life cycle" ---- so many motorists drive around in poor weather / heavy rain / approaching dusk without lights -- even when they are amongst others with lights on -- which makes them even more invisible, I keep asking myself why there is not more publicity about being safely lit and the various situations that for safety's sake lights are mandatory --- possibly a few publicised pull ups and ticketing by the Police for such omissions might awaken folks in general to this very much needed ounce of sensibility

We used to have those "SEE AND BE SEEN" public information films on TV, yet despite the obvious success of TV as an information media, it is now sadly underused.

I usually cycle between Windermere and Staveley, and use as many lights as I can get on my bike!

Please do not refer to Crashes as accidents.

Crashes are no accident.

Many crashes are accidents!
"An accident or mishap is an unforeseen and unplanned event or circumstance, often with lack of intention or necessity."
Or do you think that most people who crash actually set out do to do so.....I don't think so!
