A RARE whisky package created by an Ulverston-based company to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is selling for £100,000.
Cumbria Crystal has teamed up with John Walker & Sons – Scotch whisky distillers by appointment to Her Majesty – to mark the monarch’s 60th anniversary on the throne with a special glass and whisky collection.
The company’s products have featured on TV and big screen – including the hit period drama Downtown Abbey when 89 glasses, decanters and jugs from Cumbria Crystal were used.
Cumbria Crystal is the sole remaining producer of hand-blown and hand cut English full lead crystal and managing director Katy Holford said that the design of the hand-cut glasses aimed to bring the quality and aesthetic of cut diamonds to the crystal whisky glasses. The jubilee bottle of Scotch whisky blends grain and malt whiskies and has been distilled and maturing since 1952. The whisky is finished in a marrying cask of English oak from the Queen’s Sandringham estate.
Just 60 of these rare editions, one for each year of the Queen’s reign, will be offered for sale at £100,000 each. John Walker & Sons will donate the profits from the sale, with a guarantee of at least £1 million to the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST), the charitable arm of the Royal Warrant Holders Association that preserves rare craft and conservation skills.
Mrs Holford said: “Everybody has worked really hard to make sure this project is really special. Every detail has been very carefully planned to give the glasses a diamond look.”
