A submarine design contract is to create 280 jobs at Barrow-based BAE Systems this year.
The company announced its expected recruitment figures - as it published its latest financial figures for 2011 - showing a profit of £2bn.
The UK defence company has seen a seven per cent drop in profits and a 14 per cent fall in sales.
But the firm said a deal to develop designs for its Successor submarines would see its 5,000 strong workforce boosted.
BAE’s submarine division managing director, John Hudson said: “The Successor programme to design a replacement for the Vanguard class is gaining momentum and to that end one of the business’s key objectives for 2012 remains the recruitment of professional engineers.”
