UP to 50 new jobs could be created if an Ulverston supermarket is granted permission to change the use of part of its site.
Booths wants to create four units at the Heron Glass Building, which has been lying empty for more than a year.
The plan could go ahead if South Lakeland District Council allows the present craft workshops to be used as ‘mixed use development’.
The supermarket is also seeking to make alterations to the building and constructing a garden compound.
Several companies, including WCF and Mountain Warehouse, have expressed interest and Booths proposes sub-dividing the building to form three ground-floor units and one first-floor unit.
A spokesman said: “A number of businesses have expressed an interest. The aim of it is to create high-end retail that’s going to lift that area.
“It’s been a bit of an eyesore for the last year and, really, we want to attract high-calibre businesses.”
They added that the number of jobs created would depend on the size of the stores but estimated the figure would be ‘between 30 and 50’.
Property director Graham Booth said: “We very much look forward to bringing more quality companies to the site, to share the large existing car park and to support the offering of our Ulverston store.”
