AN OFFICIAL bid has been made to bring the world’s most prestigious cycling race to the Dales in 2016.

Tourism agency ‘Welcome to Yorkshire’ has applied to host the opening stage of the Tour de France.

The bid already has support from sprinter Mark Cavendish and his Team Sky team-mate Ben Swift.

An official route has still to be agreed upon – but it is believed the plan is to take the race through Settle and Hawes.

“Some may see us as outsiders but we think Yorkshire has a lot to offer; not just our scenery but the expertise we have in hosting sporting events,” said Gary Verity, chief executive of the tourism agency.
