This photograph, from the 1960s, shows Jordan’s Granary at the top of Allhallows Lane – an area now so changed that it is hardly recognisable though the road layout is much the same.
On the left is the Black Swan pub, with the road continuing steeply up Beast Banks. The road leading to the right now takes vehicles to Fellside and Booth’s car park. The shops on the right, with the massive round chimney, look overdue for demolition which is what happened to them, Jordan’s Granary, with its hoist and lorries loading and unloading, was swept away in the early 1970s along with much of old Fellside. The National School, further up Beast Banks, which had opened in 1819, closed for the last time in 1985. A new housing development grew up on the site, cleverly blending old buildings with new.
Cars still park on the waste land in the photograph; beyond this is the ancient Seplulchre Lane which leads to Fellside and the Quaker Burial Ground dating from 1656.
