UPDATE: Missing Spanish hunting hound's owners renew appeal for help

Hound rescued in Spain goes missing on Morecambe Bay sands Hound rescued in Spain goes missing on Morecambe Bay sands

BY HANNAH UPTON

THE owners of a beloved rescue dog from Spain, still missing after he ran off on the sands of Morecambe Bay, have said they will not stop looking for him.

Seven-year-old Encasa went missing 19 days ago (May 18) as he chased a seagull across the sands from Bardsea. Owners Roy and Emma Dulieu said they have had reports of sightings but that by the time they arrive, it is either a different dog or has disappeared.

In their quest to bring Encasa home, the Greenodd couple have even offered a £1,000 cash reward and luxury holiday to anyone who can provide information leading to him being found.

Encasa is a Podenco-cross, a breed of hunting dog that is often neglected or abandoned and which animal charities are desperate to help and rehome.

After spending nearly five years at the Ibizan Hound Rescue Centre, he was transported to England and taken in by the couple who live in Greenodd.

He has since garnered an internet following after Emma set up a blog to chart his progress from a 'desperately nervous wild animal' to an affectionate family pet, which is followed by people as far away as the USA.

But since Encasa went missing there has still been no firm information about his whereabouts.

Emma said: “He ran off right across the bay to Cartmel Sands, chasing a seagull. The tide came in and I am assuming he was stuck on the far side.

“He would never approach people as he is so fearful of everyone apart from us. Someone might have noticed a dog running around but not thought anything of it. He is more likely to hide from people than go up to them.

"We would like to thank everyone who is still searching for him. It is lovely that so many people have been looking for him. We are still hopeful"

Emma said she does not know how Encasa had been treated before he was taken in by the rescue centre, but that he was terrified of people, especially men, and may have suffered extreme abuse.

She said: “Nobody could get near him at all. When he came to us he was almost like a wild animal. After so many years waiting in the shelter in Spain, it is heartbreaking that this should happen now.”

When she uploaded a video to the internet showing how far he had come in a year, Emma said she was inundated with messages from all over the world.

Since he disappeared, Emma has been searching for Encasa in 18-hour stretches. She said she hopes he will get his bearings and come back up the bay but that he could have ended up in the Barrow or Morecambe areas.

“Even if the worst has happened, we need to know,” she said. “At the moment it is just torture not knowing what has happened to him.”

More than 500 people have joined a Facebook group to help find Encasa, with many putting posters up around the Morecambe Bay area and getting in touch with kennels, vets and businesses.

Sue Allen, who owns East Ruston Holiday Cottages in Norfolk, has offered use of one of her luxury properties for a week as a reward.

She said: “Encasa is a beautiful dog with a really gentle nature. He is known and loved by so many people.

"I know how heart broken Emma and Roy are at his disappearance and want to help them find him. That's why I'm offering one week's holiday to anyone who can provide information that helps to bring Encasa home.”

Any sightings of Encasa can be reported by calling Emma on 07969 560688.

Hope Encasa is found very soon . It's every dog owners nightmare to lose a dog and so much worse when it's a nervous dog.
Please keep your eyes peeled for Encasa if you are in the area where he went missing and phone his owner if you see him.
Don't attempt to approach him as it will frighten him.

Encasa is still missing! He has not been seen but because he is very nervous and there are plenty of hiding places that is not surprising! He may have travelled quite some way in the last week but will be somewhere near water that is drinkable - lake river pond etc and where there is plenty of cover for him to feel safe. Please everyone look out for this very special boy! He now has a Facebook page https://www.facebook

We need to find this beautiful Boy. Having come to England from Spain and having made such progress it would be a tragedy if he is not found and returned home to Roy and Emma.
I would urge anybody and everybody to look around where they live in case he is hiding somewhere near them.
Please help Encasa get home.

sir, i feel i must write regarding your coverage of this story. as distressing as it is for those concerned its a dog. There surly must be more important things going on in cumbria that deserve more coverage than this story. If the owners are unable to keep the dog on a lead and it runs of then that there fault simple as that. I have read the wg for many years but will stop doing so if it keeps hounding on about a missing dog. regards

Surely,"Sir" you must have something more interesting to do than complain about a story you clearly have no interest in, but has a huge following all over the area, it was the most read story each time it featured... as for the owner keeping it on a lead, it was on the vast sands at Bardsea, where it has been going off lead, every morning for the last 2 years. Encasa's owner is absolutely distraught about what has happened.
You obviously don't own a dog yourself, which I am sure dogs all over the county are sighing with relief about.
If you want to read a newspaper with only articles that appeal directly and exclusively to you, I suggest you print your own.

blaster760 says...
6:59pm Tue 12 Jun 12

Its a dog.clearly the owners are to blame by not keeping it on a lead. if they aint sure if it would run away or not then letting it of a lead how can they be sure it would not bite a child? Its touched the hearts of dog lovers maybe but there are the people who dont care about humans. The dog has gone and maybe now we can stop hearing about an animal and hopefully the owner will learn to keep anymore dogs they may have on a lead.... dog lovers... they wouldnt be this bothered if a child had gone missing! get real!

I pitty your "kids", having a heartless parent, with the punctual knowledge to match! Now "sir", for someone who thinks there are more important things to write about in Cumbria, you've paid more attention to this article and it's comments, than I expected. I guess you couldn't find another tabloid huh?

"they wouldnt be this bothered if a child had gone missing!"? What sort of person/parent are you?! Could I just ask though, how many times have your "kids" been "ill" from dog dirt on the beach? You are right about one thing though, I personally don't care about you or your "kids"!

Everybody is entitled to their views. Whilst we're on about insults, you're insulting me by saying I'm "sad" and "evil" & you're insulting the owner with certain comments. So how does that work? You never answered my question by how many times your kids have been ill due to dog dirt either. I'm only sad because Encasa is still out there waiting to be found. So, to everyone out there who is still helping to find Encasa, keep up the good work. Don't be put off by negative comments and remembered, even bad publicity is good publicity! ;-)

having read the story again who in the right mind lets a dog of the lead when the tide is coming in? blaster is right you are evil with the comments youmade about the parents of the child. Blaster was not insulting the owner but makes a valid point.. what would have happend if the dog ran across a road and caused an accident. The dog should have not been let of the lead. One other point why when there are so many unloved dogs in kennels in the uk does someone bring one in from spain?? also tic toc you may like to read the many studies made about sea pollution caused by dogs being allowed to foul our beaches.

Don't pass judgement on what you don't know (just incase I need to break that down for you, you don't know me, don't judge me). You're right, I haven't read the studies about sea pollution made by dogs, have you, if so, please feel free to let us know! As for "DISCUSTING" that's your view, you're entitled to it. Whether I own a dog or not is irrelevant. Don't assume that I'm not looking. It's amazing what items of technology can access the internet whilst out and about and YES I have made a donation! Anything else?

Thank god for freedom of the press after reading this! some interesting points are being made here. should the dog have been let off the lead in a public place. Its clear that the owners as well i they thought they knew the dog didnt.i agree with the point made that the dog could have attacked a child. the owners might say the dog would not do that, like they would have said the dog would not run away.
I think the point about so so many dogs being homeless in the uk is valid. Why bring a dog from outside the uk when the uk homeless dog population is growing daily.
I think its fair to say that sadly the dog will be dead. It should be a lesson to all us dog owners how ever well we think we know our best little 4 leg friends we dont. i for one will be making sure my chaps will never be out of site again.

Enough guys, this bickering isn't helping Encasa or his family.
Emma is a responsible dog owner who picks up after her dogs and takes the greatest care with them. None of her dogs are likely to attack anyone, if they were she would have kept them on the lead all the time.
And while the righteous are saying that it was her fault that Encasa went missing, think on the fact that Emma thinks this every second of every day. I really hope that if anyone who has been spewing vitriol in their comments doesn't have anything nasty happen to them and then receive the same lack of compassion they have meted out to Emma.
Fortunately, those of us that know Emma know how devoted she is to ALL dogs, not just hers. So please stop twisting the knife now & keep comments civilised.
Above all, please look out for Encasa!
