Serious accident between coach and car closes Kirkstone Pass Serious accident between coach and car closes Kirkstone Pass

A COACH and a car were involved in a serious accident on the A592 at Kirkstone Pass this lunchtime.

The 63-year-old driver of the coach and all his passengers escaped uninjured after the collision with a Kia Picanto just after 12pm.

Two fire engines, fire cars, an ambulance, police and the North West Air Ambulance were called to the scene, about a mile past the Kirkstone Pass Inn.

Fire crews were seen using cutting equipment to free two women from the Kia as the air ambulance circled finding a suitable place to land.

The 57-year-old female driver of the Kia, from Kendal, and her passenger, were taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

The driver was due to be released from hospital earlier, although the extent of the other person's injuries is still unclear.

The road was closed for around five hours while emergency services dealt with the crash and accident investigators began probing the cause.

Motorists were advised to use alternative routes.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact PC Mark Jesson at Cumbria Police Roads Policing Unit on 101.

The road going up from the Troutbeck side is quite narrow in places, especially if you happen to meet a coach coming the other way.

It looks as if that's where the collision was.

Must have been awful for the people in the car, but at least they went into the banking and not over the edge on the other side of the road.
