INDUSTRY and enterprise in the Lake District is to be celebrated with a special fly past over Windermere.

A Sea Fury and Swordfish of the Royal Navy Historic Flight will take to the skies above the lake on Monday as a memorial to the exploits of Captain Edward William Wakefield.

In the early morning of November 25 1911, a project by Cpt Wakefield saw a hydro-aeroplane called Waterbird take-off from Windermere, fly for a short time before being landed safely by pilot Herbert Stanley Adams.

The family of Cpt Wakefield, a barrister and landowner of Kendal, will commemorate his successful project - which is thought to be the first successful complete flight from water in Britain - with the Waterbird Project Commitee on Monday.

Last year's fly past was cancelled at the last minute but this year it is hoped that there will be wings over Windermere at 2.30pm.

Richard Raynsford, Trustee of The Lakes Flying Company, said: β€œIt is a tremendous privilege to have The Royal Navy Historic Flight appearing in a very special display at a location that is, for them, so far north of their base in Yeovilton. A flying display such as this is testament to how highly Edward Wakefield is regarded by the Royal Navy Historic Flight.”
