Car destroyed in motorway fire

A DRIVER and passengers escaped unharmed when their car set on fire on the M6 yesterday evening.

Fire crews from Kendal, Shap and Sedbergh were called to deal with the blaze between junctions 37 and 38 on the northbound carriageway.

On arrival just after 5.30pm they found the car well alight.

Watch Manager Martin Holroyd said: "The car was towing a caravan when the fire broke out.

"We extinguished the fire using three appliances.

"We don't yet know the exact cause of the fire. It seems to have started in the engine compartment, but we are still investigating.

"The driver and passengers were safely led away from the fire."

The car was destroyed in the fire with only minor damage to the caravan.
