Olympic medallist Jon Schofield treated his girlfriend to a slap-up stay in the Lake District to celebrate his London 2012 success.

The canoeist took partner Rachel Cawthorn to Windermere's Holbeck Ghyll for a one-night stay in a VIP suite and its Michelin starred bolt-hole for dinner.

The couple posed happily for photos and chatted about Team GB's success with guests and staff during the break.

General manager Andrew McPherson said: "Jon and Rachel were absolutely lovely. We thought they would just want to relax but they went sailing on Windermere and clearly worked up an appetite because they had the seven course Gourmet Menu that night. Afterwards they said it had been an Olympic feat getting through it!"

Schofield and his girlfriend, who herself is a kayaker training for the 2016 Olympics in Rio, took to Twitter following their break to say how ‘beautiful’ they had found the hotel and surrounding area. Several of Schofield's TeamGB mates have since booked to stay at Holbeck Ghyll, including gold medallists Pete Reed and Alex Gregory and the Brownlee brothers.
