Arnside beach shut over bank-holiday weekend

A section of Arnside beach is to be closed this weekend as a safety measure.

Station officer at Arnside Coastguard, Nigel Capstick, said the decision was made after an assessment of the area.

"Between the pier and Ash Meadows the quicksand is the worst we have ever seen, due to the United Utilities work.

"We therefore have made the decision to completely shut that section of the beach because we do not want anybody on there - it's too dangerous."

Chairman of the parish council, Dave Willacy, has put up signs to deter people, which add to the United Utilities barriers.

"The work has stopped for the bank holiday weekend so we don't want people thinking it is ok to go out there," he said.

It will be closed off until Tuesday morning, when work will re-commence.
