Coel, 4, is youngest to climb all the Wainwrights

A BOY aged four years and 10 months has become the youngest person to climb all 214 peaks in Alfred Wainwright's Lake District guide books.

Coel Lavery has stolen the prestigious achievement from his older brother Sail, who held the title since 2009 when at the age of five he finished scaling the challenging fells.

The determined four-year-old climbed his first Wainwright in October 2009 on Sale Fell, near Cockermouth, and took his last step up St Sunday Crag on Monday, August 13.

Pictures were taken at each summit, including England's largest mountain Scafell Pike, which reaches 3,209 feet.

Coel has been trekking the fells ever since he learned to walk. His dad Dr David Chapman said he enjoyed going out with his older brothers and sister.

“He loves being part of the gang,” said Mr Chapman, who has a holiday cottage at Borrowdale. “We always go out whenever we can. As a family we love being outdoors.”

The family recently moved to the Isle of Mull, Scotland, where Mr Chapham said the mountains are a bit wilder and steeper.

“Coel hasn’t been climbing many of them yet,” said Mr Chapman, who hails from a much flatter area, Beverley, East Yorkshire.

Coel conquered the Wainwright peaks before he even went to school. He starts this month but his dad is confident this will not affect his passion for walking.
