UPDATE - Passenger train derails in west Cumbria

A PASSENGER train carrying Sellafield employees derailed this morning when it struck a landslide near Nethertown, south of Caulderton.

Police said the two-carriage train, travelling towards Sellafield, derailed at 7.20am, with more than 100 passengers on board.

No injuries have been reported and the train remained upright.

Cumbria police, along with officers from the British Transport Police, Civil Nuclear Constabulary, and fire crews from Whitehaven, Workington and Frizington were also called to the scene.

A second train is being sent to pick up the passengers, who will be taken to a reception centre at Sellafield.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area while emergency vehicles are travelling to the scene.
