Police arrest suspected illegal immigrants in Cumbria

SIX men have been arrested on suspicion of being illegal immigrants after they were seen running from a HGV in Penrith.

Police are investigating the incident that was reported at 3pm yesterday (Wednesday) on the dual carriageway of the A66 at Redhills.

The HGV stopped in a lay-by and a number of people were seen to jump from the rear of the vehicle and run away.

Following a search of the area, six men aged 15, 18, 22, 21 and two aged 25, of Afghan origin were arrested.

Officers believe that they have caught everyone who jumped from the van and no one remains outstanding.

They thanked members of the public for all of their help. The UK Board Agency will continue with the investigation.
