Shap man appears in court today accused of attempted murder

A SHAP man appeared before a judge at Carlisle Crown Court today accused of trying to murder another man in the village.

John Lowis, 44, was arrested after an incident at Jackson Lane, Shap, just before midnight on Sunday August 12 in which 52-year-old Russell Mitchell suffered head and facial injuries.

During the five-minute hearing Lowis, of Mill Crest, Main Street, spoke only to confirm his name.

He will not be asked to enter a plea to the charge until he next appears in court, on October 15.

A provisional trial date was set as November 12, before a visiting High Court judge.

In the meantime he was remanded in custody.
