Cumbria Women of the Year deadline looms

THE deadline to nominate inspiring candidates for the 2012 Cumbria Women of the Year awards is looming.

The awards, which honour women throughout the county who work selflessly for the benefit of others, will be held in November and nominations should be submitted by Septebmer 28.

This year, CWY organisers are hoping female connections with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and Olympics will be celebrated as part of the awards.

Tess Hart MBE, chairman of Cumbria Women of the Year (CWY), said: “We are struck by the generosity of spirit, tenacity and courage that drives so many to do so much for others.

“As well as looking for ladies who do a lot of work in their community we are also highlighting the Jubilee and Olympics. We know there are a lot of women who excelled in these areas – especially with the torch relay.

“Also, because it is the year of the Olympics, we thought it would be nice to have nominations from women who have excelled in sport as well.”

The CWY award recipients, including the main award of Cumbria Woman of the Year and the Cumbria Lifetime Achievement award, will be revealed at a lunch at Storrs Hall in Windermere on November 29.

Last year's winner was the BBC Radio Cumbria presenter Val Armstrong, who was diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time in 2010. The CWY event is sponsored by English Lakes Hotel Group, Cumberland Building Society, Cumbria Crystal, Sarah Nelson’s Grasmere Gingerbread, Levens Hall near Kendal, Lloyd Motors, the University of Cumbria and Cumbria Life magazine.

The awards are also a fundraising event and cash raised this year will go to Parkinson's UK. Nomination forms should be sent to CWY, Briar Bank, Langdale Crescent, Windermere, LA23 2HE. For more details visit www.cumbriawomenoftheyear.co.uk
