South Lakeland schools can bag cash by recycling textiles

GREEN-fingered youngsters can bag cash for their school by helping South Lakes residents recycle textiles.
Headteachers can volunteer to have a recycling bank placed at their school for the public to dispose of materials.
And schools will receive income for every tonne of textiles collected at their bank.
The items will be collected by South Lakeland District Council’s contractor Cumbria Waste Recycling (CWR) in a year-long trial starting in November.
As more schools take part in the scheme, collection costs will reduce and CWR will increase the payment paid to each school.
Coun Clare Feeney-Johnson, portfolio holder for the environment and sustainability, said: “This new scheme is fantastic for South Lakeland as schools will benefit from having a textiles recycling bank on their premises.
“More waste is being recycled than being sent to landfill and I am encouraging all our local schools to sign up now and take part in this environmentally friendly scheme.”
