TALENTED junior athletes in South Lakeland will benefit from an £850 cash boost.
The money will go into the Cumbria Talented Athlete Fund, aimed at ensuring the London 2012 legacy continues well into the future for local athletes.
It was raised at Lakes Leisure Kendal’s 30th birthday open day when more than 1,300 people took part in a host of sports, and activities, for just £1, including an all-day junior Olympics, bucking bronco, and bouncy castle.
Beth Richards, 17, of Kendal, represents Team GB at waterpolo and has received funding which has enabled her to train abroad, and buy extra equipment.
She said: “The fund has been a real help and, hopefully, if I continue to train hard, I will represent Team GB at Rio 2016, which would be a great achievement”
Isabel Kirk, 14, also from Kendal, represents Great Britain at ski-ing and started her sport aged three. She hopes to take part in the 2018 winter Olympics.
Isabel said: “I am really grateful to the fund for helping and enabling me to train at the venues I need. Hopefully, I will continue making great progress.”
